How has the needs of packaging buyers changed over the years?
While in the past brands and packaging buyers had a segmented buying supply chain, today's packaging customers are looking for merger buying. They are looking for suppliers who can handle low-end to high-end projects, from ideas to production to distribution. What factors cause this change? It all depends on efficiency and quality. If you have a segmented buying supply chain, there is a big disconnect between each supplier. One supplier may be making vacuum pallets while the next supplier is responsible for the complete packaging. The problem is that they are not connected to each other, which leaves a lot of room for errors and quality inconsistencies. When we use such small errors in packaging, accuracy is crucial. Low-end to high-end suppliers have better control. This improves quality consistency. Fewer suppliers means better control and quality. When selecting low-to-high-end suppliers, customers typically look for three aspects: creativity, quality, and on-time delivery. Nobody used the same packaging a decade ago. It's all about innovation. Most customers do not seek the typical expected packaging. They want to raise the bar on their packaging so that they want to know that they are working with a highly creative supplier, which can not only make their vision possible, but also push the boundaries of creativity. Quality is equally important. It is essential to ensure that the final product meets or exceeds the quality expectations of customers and end consumers. Quality becomes consistent from one job to the next. On-time delivery is certainly expected, but the defining aspect of a reputable supplier. Being able to meet strict turnaround times or ensure that projects are always completed on time is a challenge for inexperienced vendors. If customers work with multiple vendors in the mix, on-time delivery is less likely. We have to keep in mind that there are a lot of activity parts in the customer's overall plan-release dates, marketing campaigns, etc. That's why on-time delivery is so important.
